Can problems in the neck contribute to headaches?

Yes. Certain headaches can have a cervical component, especially when the examination shows restricted motion in the upper or mid-cervical spine, poor segmental motion, neck stiffness, suboccipital tightness, forward head posture or loss of the normal cervical curve.We also look at whether turning the head, looking up or looking down aggravates the headache, because that can provide clues that the cervical spine may be involved. Cervicogenic headache patterns commonly begin around the base of the skull and may refer upward into the back of the head or toward the area behind the ear.We do not assume that every headache comes from the neck. The goal is to determine whether cervical dysfunction appears to be one contributing factor in that individual patient.

What chiropractic techniques do you use — and do I have to be manually adjusted?

Accepted Answer

We use a variety of chiropractic techniques so care can be matched to the individual rather than using the same approach for every patient.Our techniques include Gonstead, Specific Diversified, Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT), Thompson Drop, Activator Technique, ArthroStim instrument adjusting, and CBP-informed corrective and postural analysis.Dr. Scott uses a broader combination of manual, upper-cervical, instrument-assisted and postural adjusting techniques, while Dr. Jennifer primarily uses Activator and ArthroStim for patients who prefer a gentler, lower-force approach.You do not have to be manually adjusted. The technique is selected based on your examination findings, age, condition, goals, comfort level and response to care.

Do you offer physical therapy, rehabilitation exercises, spinal decompression or home care along with chiropractic care?

Accepted Answer

We are not a physical therapy clinic, but active rehabilitation and home care are important parts of our spinal-optimization approach. Before adjustments, patients perform spinal warm-up movements on a stability disc through three dimensions of motion—side-to-side, front-to-back and rotation—to prepare the spine and surrounding muscles and connective tissues for movement. After adjusting, we may use a vibration platform as part of neuromuscular and postural retraining.When appropriate, we also teach individualized stretches, mobility and strengthening exercises, postural strategies, and traction or spinal decompression techniques that patients can use at home. We think of this as spinal hygiene and spinal stability—similar to dental hygiene, it means learning how to consistently care for and support your spine rather than relying only on what happens during an office visit.Our goal is to empower patients with practical tools they can use between visits and throughout life to support a healthier, stronger and more stable spine based on their individual findings, needs and goals.

What does “neurologically based” chiropractic mean?

Accepted Answer

“Neurologically based” means we look beyond where you hurt and evaluate how your spine and nervous system are functioning and adapting. Your nervous system controls and coordinates movement, muscle tone, posture, balance, and many of the body’s responses to physical and everyday stress.As part of our evaluation, we may use objective tools such as heart-rate variability (HRV), surface EMG, thermal scanning and balance testing, along with spinal examination, posture, movement and X-rays when clinically appropriate. These findings help us identify patterns, establish a baseline and make more informed decisions about your chiropractic care.These technologies are not used to diagnose unrelated medical conditions. Rather, they provide additional information about spinal and nervous-system function that we can follow over time as part of a more comprehensive, individualized approach.

Do you adjust areas other than the spine, such as the jaw, shoulders, wrists, ribs, hips, feet and ankles?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Chiropractic care at Waddell Wellness is not limited to the spine. Dr. Scott has extensive experience with extremity adjusting and has  postgraduate training in extremity assessment and adjusting through Dr. Kevin Hearon and the Council on Extremity Adjusting. His training also includes techniques learned from a chiropractor who cared for the San Francisco 49ers.Depending on the patient’s evaluation and findings, care may include precise manual or instrument-assisted  adjusting of the TMJ/jaw, shoulders, wrists, ribs, hips, feet and ankles, along with other joints of the extremities.Rib-joint restrictions and fixation are an especially common area Dr. Scott evaluates. These can sometimes be overlooked when attention is focused primarily on the spine or surrounding muscles. For athletes and active adults in particular, evaluating the extremities can be an important part of understanding how the entire body is moving and functioning.

Is chiropractic only for pain relief?

Accepted Answer

No. Pain is often what first brings someone to a chiropractor, but at Waddell Wellness we look beyond simply getting someone out of pain. Our broader goal is to help patients improve spinal function, mobility, posture, stability and nervous-system adaptability so they can stay active and function well over the long term.Some patients continue with supportive care even when they are feeling good because they value maintaining mobility, addressing the physical stresses of work, exercise and everyday life, and continuing the spinal-hygiene habits they learned during care. For an athlete or active adult, the goal may be staying mobile, durable and able to keep doing what they love rather than waiting until something hurts.Patients also sometimes report changes beyond their original musculoskeletal complaint, such as better sleep, energy, stress resilience or overall well-being. Those experiences vary from person to person, and we don't assume that every health concern is caused by the spine or that chiropractic is a treatment for unrelated medical conditions.

How do you decide what type of chiropractic care is right for me?

We start by understanding your history, current concerns, activity level and goals. From there, we evaluate spinal structure, posture, movement and neurological function. Depending on the individual, that may include digital X-rays, HRV, surface EMG, thermal scanning and balance testing.We also consider factors such as your age, previous injuries or surgeries, the duration and severity of the problem, your comfort and adjusting preferences, and what you want to be able to do again or continue doing.Those findings help us determine the appropriate adjusting approach, frequency of care, corrective or home-care strategies, and what should be reassessed over time. We don’t believe every patient needs the same technique or the same care plan. The goal is to build an approach around your individual findings, needs and goals—and then adjust that plan as your progress is reassessed.

How long will I need chiropractic care?

Accepted Answer

There is no one schedule that is right for every patient. Recommendations are based on your examination findings, spinal history, neurological findings, X-rays when appropriate, how long a problem has been developing, your goals and how you respond to care.Long-standing spinal and postural patterns generally require more repetition than a recent, uncomplicated problem. We often use the analogy of orthodontics: meaningful change typically requires consistency over time rather than one isolated visit. Care may begin more frequently and then be spaced farther apart as progress is reassessed.Depending on the findings, some patients need only a shorter period of care, while others benefit from a more comprehensive spinal-optimization plan. Afterward, some choose supportive care at a reduced frequency—such as weekly, twice monthly or monthly—based on their goals, lifestyle demands and how they are functioning over time.

Do you offer one-time adjustments or care just for temporary pain relief?

Accepted Answer

Our practice is generally not designed around one-time or walk-in adjustments. Most people who come to Waddell Wellness are looking for a more thorough understanding of a recurring or long-standing problem and want a plan aimed at improving spinal function, mobility and long-term health—not simply reducing discomfort for a day or two.That is why we begin with a comprehensive evaluation rather than adjusting someone based only on where they hurt that day. When appropriate, care may involve a shorter course, but our recommendations are based on what we find and what the patient wants to accomplish.If someone is simply looking for an occasional adjustment with no evaluation, education or longer-term plan, another style of chiropractic practice may be a better fit. Our focus is building an ongoing doctor-patient relationship and giving people the knowledge and tools to actively care for their spine over time.

What if I’ve already tried chiropractic, physical therapy, injections or other care and I’m still having problems?

Accepted Answer

That’s actually a common reason patients come to Waddell Wellness. Many of the people featured in our patient reviews had already tried other forms of care—or had been dealing with the same problem for months or years—before coming to us.Our approach is to take a fresh, thorough look at the problem rather than simply repeat what has already been done. We review your history, previous treatment, available imaging, spinal mechanics and neurological findings, then build an individualized plan around what we find. In more complex or persistent cases, that may also mean recommending additional imaging or another specialist evaluation when appropriate.We’re especially well suited for patients who are looking for a more comprehensive evaluation and a different strategy after previous care has not produced the progress they were hoping for.

Question 11

Do you recommend nutritional supplements as part of care?

Accepted Answer

When appropriate, yes. Nutrition and targeted supplementation can be part of the broader wellness recommendations we make for some patients, particularly when lifestyle, recovery, metabolic health or nutritional support are part of their goals.We primarily work with Designs for Health®, a professional nutraceutical company whose products we have used and recommended for many years. Patients can order recommended products through our Waddell Wellness provider dispensary and have them shipped directly to their home.Supplement recommendations are individualized rather than automatically added to every care plan. We consider the patient’s history, current medications and supplements, lifestyle, goals and other relevant factors, and we encourage appropriate coordination with a patient’s medical provider when needed.

Do you refer for MRI, CT scans or diagnostic ultrasound when needed?

Accepted Answer

Yes. When a patient’s examination, symptoms or progress indicate that additional information would be helpful, we routinely refer for advanced diagnostic imaging such as MRI, CT or diagnostic ultrasound. We work with local imaging centers, including SimonMed Imaging, where the studies are interpreted and accompanied by a formal radiology report.Advanced imaging may be appropriate when someone has persistent numbness or tingling, suspected disc or nerve involvement, a more complex injury, or is not progressing as expected.We use those findings together with the patient’s history and examination to help guide next steps. When appropriate, we can also refer patients for further evaluation by spinal orthopedic specialists, neurosurgeons or other healthcare providers we know and trust.

Question 13

Do you offer massage therapy or deep-tissue muscle work in your office?

Accepted Answer

We do not currently provide massage therapy inside Waddell Wellness, but we believe good soft-tissue work can be a valuable complement to chiropractic care for some patients.We have developed relationships with experienced local massage therapists in the Laguna Niguel area whom we regularly recommend based on a patient’s needs. Their services include deep-tissue and sports massage, myofascial work, scraping techniques and cupping, along with more targeted neuromuscular soft-tissue work.Rather than trying to provide every service under one roof, we prefer to identify skilled local practitioners we trust and refer patients when another type of care may complement what we are doing.

Do you accept insurance, and what are my payment options?

Accepted Answer

Waddell Wellness is primarily a cash-based, out-of-network practice. This allows us to base recommendations on each patient’s examination findings, goals and clinical needs rather than designing care around an insurance company’s visit limits or reimbursement rules.Patients with out-of-network benefits may request a superbill to submit directly to their insurance company for possible reimbursement. The amount reimbursed depends on the individual plan, deductible and out-of-network benefits. We also accept HSA and FSA funds, and payment options are available for more comprehensive care plans.We do not participate with HMO plans, Medi-Cal/Medicaid or TRICARE. Auto-injury cases may be handled differently when MedPay benefits are available or, in selected cases, when care is accepted on an attorney lien by prior arrangement.If you have questions about your specific coverage or payment options, our team is happy to explain how it works before you begin care.

Question 15

Do you treat auto accident and whiplash injuries, and do you accept MedPay or attorney liens?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We evaluate and care for patients after auto accidents, including people dealing with whiplash, neck or back pain, headaches, stiffness, restricted movement and other musculoskeletal or nerve-related symptoms following a collision.If your auto insurance includes Medical Payments coverage (MedPay), we may be able to work directly with those benefits for your care. In selected personal-injury cases, we may also accept treatment on an attorney lien when the arrangement is approved in advance.If you have been injured but do not yet have legal representation, we can provide contact information for attorneys we know and respect who handle personal-injury cases; the choice of attorney is always yours.Because every accident and insurance situation is different, contact our office and we can help you understand the options that may apply to your case.
